Introduction

Markethill Primary School approached Creative Activity with a pressing need to enhance their sensory motor program. Recognising the limitations of their existing sensory motor program, which was allocated to the school assembly hall and only available at certain timetabled slots, they sought a solution to provide continuous access to sensory facilities throughout the school day. In 2023 Creative Activity implemented phase one of the sensory corridor and in January 2024 added phase two.

Background

Markethill had previously engaged with Creative Activity using our range of catalogues for educational resources and ordering during the requisition period. When Alison Atkinson stepped into the role of SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator), she sought advice from other SENCOs in the industry about potential sensory facilities, and they recommended Creative Activity based on their positive experiences. This led Markethill to choose CA to enhance its sensory education program, building on the existing relationship and signalling a commitment to meeting the diverse needs of their students.

Challenges

The existing sensory program was scheduled in the school’s assembly hall during certain timetabled slots. However, this posed a challenge as the hall was also used for other activities such as school dinners, indoor play or group sessions, limiting its availability. Consequently, children were unable to access additional sensory facilities when needed, leading to a restriction in accommodating students throughout the day.

Recognising the importance of integrating sensory activities into the daily routine to support sensory processing needs and enhance gross motor skills for all students, Markethill needed to find a solution to this.

The Solution

Creative Activity designed and installed a bespoke Sensory Circuit, tailored to the specific needs and space constraints, that seamlessly integrates into the existing Sensory Motor Program whilst offering a dedicated space for sensory activities. Sensory Circuits aim to assist children with sensory processing, to help regulate and organise senses and can be used as part of the school curriculum.

The following components were pivotal to the success of the project:

Accessibility:

The sensory circuit serves as an extension and solution to accessibility challenges, providing constant availability for all users

Ease of Use:

The sensory circuit's pre-set setup eliminates the need for preparation, always ensuring convenient use.

Sensory Focused:

Phase two prioritised designing activities to enhance proprioceptive and vestibular systems which are essential for development.

Interactive Activities:

Elements of our design including the 'Copy Me' activity encourages peer interaction and engagement among children.

Safe Space for Movement:

Accessible throughout the day, the sensory circuit offers a safe environment for movement breaks, promoting readiness for learning.

Collaborative Design:

Close collaboration with school ensured that the circuit's design and activities met the diverse needs of Markethill's students, involving input from all staff members.

Results and Feedback

Considerable thought went into selecting activities for the corridor that align with the school's sensory program, catering to children's alerting, organising, and calming needs. The corridor provides a secure and easily accessible space for students to engage in movement breaks, thereby enhancing their readiness to learn.

Alison Atkinson, SENCO, expressed gratitude for Creative Activity's support:

"From the initial discussion to the design, creation, and installation, the entire Creative Activity team has been there every step of the way. Their involvement has been reassuring and has made the process enjoyable and worthwhile. We are delighted to have this fabulous asset at Markethill Primary School for our children to access and use."
