Introduction
At Creative Activity, we are committed to designing and delivering sensory solutions that transform learning environments for students with diverse needs. We have had the privilege of working with Sandelford Special School on a number of projects, helping to create engaging and inclusive spaces that support sensory development and well-being. Our most recent collaboration saw the installation of a Senso Cube™ and a Sensory Circuit, enhancing the school's ability to provide tailored sensory experiences for its students. These solutions are designed to create accessible, effective regulation spaces that fit seamlessly into the school’s daily routine.
Background
Sandelford Special School provides tailored support for students with additional learning needs. Sensory regulation plays a key role in helping pupils stay engaged, focused, and ready to learn. While the school has a traditional sensory room, staff wanted a more flexible and accessible solution that would allow for individual and small-group regulation within the classroom environment.
Additionally, they needed a way to integrate movement breaks and sensory circuits into daily routines without taking up valuable space.
Challenge & Solution: Senso Cube™
One of the challenges faced by the school was that their existing sensory room required students to leave the classroom for sensory regulation. This transition could sometimes be disruptive, as pupils were exposed to distractions around the school while moving between spaces. Teachers also wanted a dedicated in-class sensory space where they could work with pupils one-on-one or in small groups, ensuring a quiet and controlled environment.
The modular Senso Cube™ provided the perfect solution. Installed at the back of the nursery classroom, it offers a calm, sound proof space for sensory regulation without requiring pupils to leave the learning environment. By keeping the Cube within the classroom, students can regulate as needed and then re-engage with without external distractions. This setup supports a seamless transition between learning and sensory breaks, helping students stay focused and reducing disruptions.
The best part is that the Senso Cube™ did not require the construction of a separate room, providing a quick and efficient solution that integrated seamlessly into the existing space. Additionally, its modular design allowed for a rapid installation and a quick turnaround time, enabling the school to begin benefiting from the sensory space almost immediately.
Challenge & Solution: Sensory Circuit
Another key challenge was the need for movement-based regulation activities in a space-efficient way. While movement breaks are essential for many pupils, room limitations meant that setting up a permanent area for sensory exercises was not feasible. Teachers also wanted an approach that would guide pupils through structured regulation activities without requiring additional equipment or major changes to the school layout.
The Sensory Circuit, installed in a corridor, addressed this need perfectly. Using floor and wall markings, it provides a clear, step-by-step guide that helps pupils follow along with structured activities. The circuit incorporates a sequence of alerting, organising, and calming movements, ensuring that pupils can self-regulate and return to class ready to learn. Because the markings are permanent yet unobtrusive, the circuit takes up no extra space and is easily accessible from the classroom.
Pupils can follow the markings independently or mirror the teacher’s actions, making it an engaging and effective regulation tool. Like the Senso Cube, the Sensory Circuit was quickly installed and was ready for use almost immediately, providing an efficient solution to support movement-based regulation.
Positive Impact and Feedback
Both the Senso Cube™ and Sensory Circuit have provided practical, accessible solutions for sensory regulation at Sandelford, allowing teachers to offer flexible support for pupils in managing their sensory needs within the daily routine. This has helped create a more inclusive, supportive learning environment.
The response from both staff and students has been overwhelmingly positive, with teachers reporting noticeable improvements in student engagement, self-regulation, and overall mood.
